A Wondrous Life

Lyrics

PLASTIC, VINYL & LEATHER

Plastic, vinyl and leather
Whatever it takes to hold me together
You’re sifting through pages from my history
I’m counting on any little victory

Pen marks on white paper
I better say something clever
But I just want to be here now

I’m running as fast as these legs will take me
You don’t know what these eyes have seen
I’m last in a long line of make believers
Acting out all the words written for me

The middle of the road was safer
So I headed for the ditch
And I want to be here now
hey-hey-hey
Plastic, vinyl and leather
Strips and pieces, sewn up together
OOOOH I fistful of promises of new beginnings
In the end I ask myself which one of us is winning

You’re looking at the same sleepwalker
And you’re my tap on the shoulder
Turning on the living room light
Pointing to a wondrous life
Ain’t it a wondrous life
Ain’t it a wondrous life
And I want to be here now

NO SUCH LUCK

You can swear till your teeth fall out
You got it all sorted out against all boardroom opinion
Nothing’s wasted on this tiny village of a man
I’m doing all I can to accomplish your mission.

But you move a mile a minute
Tick – ticking
You need to park but no such luck
Don’t buy the trailer, if you can’t back it up.

The longer road it makes you sweat
But the shorter road it makes you bleed
The odometer that you’ve always kept
Is giving you answers you won’t need.
So you move a mile a minute
And you’re taking me with it
You need to park but no such luck

Don’t you know a little less muscle a little more soul.

You’re carrying the torch alone while I’m asleep
Down there in the mines busting rocks while I eat
You got one eye on the ball and the other eye for greatness
But all you ever see is my ability for lateness

So you move a mile a minute
Tick-tick-tick-tick ticking
You need to park but no such luck
Don’t buy the trailer, if you can’t back it up.

Don’t you know a little less muscle a little more soul.

HAIL MARYS

Who do I thank for the wide open spaces
I’ll text you every 100 mile
Doing my best to stay in your good graces
Trying my best but I forget you sometimes

I got my GPS for company
I’m never alone
Life out here is so simple
Until I get home
Who do I thank for the wide open spaces

It’s not what you’re driving to
It’s what you’re running from

So ditch the iPhone
Unpack the Insta-Matic
Shoot through the windshield
Don’t mind the glare
Dial any station
Listen through the static
Hail Marys, they don’t work out here

I’m grateful for the wide open spaces
I’ll meet you in the next College town
The women there, they’re going to put me through my paces
Coffee, laptops, better keep your eyes down

They’re on the steep part of the learning curve
I had my chances when I was younger but never had the nerve
Still I wonder
Who do I thank for the wide open spaces

Only three more exits
Then I get off

So ditch the iPhone
Unpack the Insta-Matic
Shoot through the windshield
Don’t mind the glare
Dial any station
Listen through the static
Hail Marys, they don’t work out here
Out here
Out here

Keep your headlights on
For the next twenty miles

So ditch the iPhone
Unpack the Insta-Matic
Shoot through the windshield
Don’t mind the glare
Dial any station
Listen through the static
Hail Marys, they don’t work out here
Hail Marys
Hail Marys

CRAZY IS THE ONLY PLACE FOR A SAINT

TV on till dawn
Channel up volume down
Something to gaze upon
When there’s none else around
Don’t tell me this drinking is bad for my health
If god made anything better he kept it for himself
And he aint sharing

The witch hunt has begun
I should hold my tongue
Oh but I won’t

So lodge your complaint
The only thing holding up these walls is the paint
Crazy is the only place for a Saint

Sleeping on the couches in the apartments of my friends
And just like their carpets it’s starting to wear thin
You won’t find my biography up on your coffee table
I’ll clear out of here as soon as I am able
But not soon enough

My train of thought it must have jumped the rails again
All aboard

And lodge your complaint
The only thing holding up these walls is the paint
Crazy is the only place for a Saint

Got a mustang for a day, I should make my getaway
Crazy is the only place for a Saint
I was left in the oven for too long they say
But worn smooth by years of use

So lodge your complaint
The only thing holding up these walls is the paint
Crazy is the only place for a Saint

MOTHERLESS SON

The fruit don’t fall so far from the tree
A fall sense of security
So we take what we’re given
As heavy as a mountain, as light as a ghost
One day we’re singing, the next it’s a foot to the throat
We call that living

These are the words of a Motherless Son
These are the eyes of a fatherless man
But I know what I’ve had to overcome
Has made me who I am

A black and white photo in a frame
Of all those people, only one remains
And I wore a thin smile
So I made the big decision to step off the launching pad
You can’t lose what we never had
Oh sweet denial

These are the words of a Motherless Son
These are the eyes of a fatherless man
But I know what I’ve had to overcome
Has made me who I am

Ill fated
Liberated
Vindicated
Elevated
Don’t ask me what’s cooking in my kitchen
If you want my truth, just read my fiction

These are the eyes of a fatherless man
These are the words of a Motherless Son
And after all I’ve come to understand
I’m not the only one I’m not the only one.

GUARD DOG

When you walk with me it’s no walk in the park
I guarantee my bite is worse than my bark
And if you call me you know I will come
But don’t make me beg
I’ll only turn and run

I’m your guard dog
Not your yard dog
Lead me but don’t let me off your leash

It’s a high price to pay for a well-tanned hide
But what you rip from my back is only muscle and pride
You’re not the first one to beat me into submission

But after all these years I shouldn’t have to
Ask for permission

I’m your guard dog
Not your yard dog
Lead me but don’t let me off your leash

I’m your guard dog
Not your yard dog
I’ve been faithful
To a fault
It’s no one’s fault but my own
Don’t make me bite the hand
Just lead me but don’t let me off your leash

WHEN I PAINT MY HALO GOLD
I forced my way into her dream
What I called love she called obscene
Crossed me off her Christmas list
The right tool but the wrong job
I prayed for rain and I swore to God
One day this drought would lose its grip

So I’ll broadcast it all over town
I’ll post in all caps and bold
You won’t recognize me next time around
When I paint my halo gold

Missing flights, flat tires
Rolling red lights, starting fires
Floating on an evil breeze
I stared between her pale blue eyes
Watched her cut me down to size
You can’t stand tall on your knees

So I’ll broadcast it all over town
I’ll post in all caps and bold
You won’t recognize me next time around
When I paint my halo gold

They say the tongue is the heart of the fool
I don’t shut up so I know it must be true
But I no longer play games that when I win
I still lose

Sometimes we need to break a rib
To squeeze on through
To make it fit
What you call lazy I call style
So call the fat lady, plug her in
She won’t ask me where I’ve been
Or why I’ve wasted so much time

So I’ll broadcast it all over town
I’ll post in all caps and bold
You won’t recognize me next time around
When I paint my halo gold
I’ve already made my worst mistakes
I could never fit the mold
I hope you’re satisfied the next time you see me
When I paint my halo gold

BURST
You show me yours
I’ll show you mine
Pockets turned inside out
Nothing to hide
A three day jubilee
Spills into a year
What becomes history
Are the smiles and the tears

We burst into bloom
Burst into flames
Burst and all that remains
Is me and you

South Carolina was South enough for us
Landed in Baltimore
One winter was enough
It was so cold it burned
Windows frozen shut
Shouting to be heard
Who is whoWhere we stand
What is what

We burst into bloom
Burst into flames

Burst and all that remains
Is me and you
