RIYL: She & Him, Deer Tick, and Surfer Blood
As the last week of October approaches, we find ourselves anticipating a Christmas album from She & Him (at this rate they'll start playing Christmas music in August), as well as releases from Deer Tick and Surfer Blood.
So today it's October 20, and in a few days, we'll be graced with another She & Him album, but it's not just any She & Him album. It's A Very She & Him Christmas. Now, I love Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, but Christmas music, not so much. However, I'll hold my reservations until I actually get to hear it. I'm willing to bet if anyone could do a Christmas the right way, it's them. In the meantime, if you'd like some great duos similar to She & Him, be sure to check out Loves It! and Gwyneth & Monko.
Deer Tick is also set to come out with a new album, Divine Providence, on Tuesday. The thing I love about them is their simplicity. In an age of studio frills, Deer Tick doesn't need anything fancy. I tend to admire that in musicians. There's some honesty in it. Likewise, at GLG we have Ed Hale, who has been drawing attention from the national level as well. His song, "New Orleans Dream", reached 30 on the AC Charts. It's definitely something to put on repeat until Deer Tick comes out next week.
Last up this week is Surfer Blood. Their last release was just over a year and a half ago, and come Tuesday, they're set to release their EP, Tarot Classics. There's something about Surfer Blood's loud, guitar heavy approach to indie rock that seems to be resonating with people. Bands like them and Cymbals Eat Guitars (who also released a great album not to long ago) seem to be leading the way of this weird loud guitar shoegaze that people can't quite seem To shorten the wait time of Surfer Blood's new EP, I think Baby Teardrops will do the trick!
As always, be sure to tune in on Spotify!

Every week, we'll tell you about a few of our favorite records coming out for the week and a few of our bands that we recommend if you like. Not as a, "Hey, this band sounds exactly like that band," but as more of a, "As a music fan, you might enjoy something similar."
