Young Readers Release New Single "Homesick" Out Now

It’s possible to be homesick for a person just the same as it is to be of a place. Indie folk group, Young Readers, tells the somber story of a Civil War soldier homesick for his love while he’s suffering in an infirmary of typhoid fever in their gorgeous new single, "Homesick". Swelling horns, Jordan Herrera’s heartsick vocals and the deliberate pace set by acoustic guitar and drums all bring the story to life, and evoke that feeling of longing to be with the one you love. Young Readers will play NXNE 2013 on Jun. 13 at Magpie Taproom.

People in your life often see something in you before you do. While Young Readers’ Jordan Herrera was attending Oklahoma State University for music composition, a private instructor told him he did not belong in school. She promised she would overlook his absences and give him good grades as long as he promised in return to focus on music and not so much on school.

"I can always be the old guy in college. I can't always be the old starving musician trying to 'make it,'" thought Herrera. The next semester he dropped out, recorded the Family Trees EP and went on tour the same day it was released.

Within a year, Young Readers played over 100 shows including performances at SXSW, the Kahbang Music Festival and Norman Music Festival. Family Trees won “Top Ten Best Local Albums of 2012” in the Oklahoma Gazette. They were asked to contribute the Postal Service song “We Will Become Silhouettes” for a compilation honoring the 10 year anniversary of Give Up. Later this spring, they will release a single/B-Side via Lorem Ipsum Recordings in Portland, Maine.

There is almost always a dreamy or imaginary quality to Young Readers indie folk songs; a sense that reality is suspended, even if for a few minutes.
