Whetherman Announces Folk Album Release June 16

Leading with the single, “What Am I Supposed to Think?” addressing concerns over Trump’s tweets, Whetherman announces the June 16 album release of This Land. Guised under the Whetherman moniker, Nicholas Williams’s nomadic folk is sprinkled with societal commentary about the current state of American affairs and the more grounded nature of day to day relationships. Told through a contemplative lens, topics range from time in nature, moral struggles, gained and lost love, land conservation, and political agendas of profits over people.

The album pays homage to the collective messages spread by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger of “this land was made for you and me” with tinges of American-made spanning folk, blues, soul, country, and bluegrass. “Six Rivers” serves as a reminder of nature as a calming force; “Hold Up” merges the parallels of financial instability with gun violence; “This Land’ is a conduit to environmental protection; and “All About Nothing” is a commentary on media’s role in the political system. Williams says, “Being on the move and going to new places regularly became an integral part of being cultured on different perspectives and walks of life, and that outlook has certainly crept into my music. I don’t believe in judgement without action, and I do not discriminate against anyone. But most of all, traveling has afforded me a lot of time in nature, which has been the largest inspiration for my songs.”

A lyrical commentary on Donald Trump’s tweets, “What Am I Supposed To Think?” comes off like a late night conversation with Father John Misty at the local bar. It is a conversation not unlike many happening across the world when it comes to the topic of Trump. Set to a backdrop of fingerpicking guitar and warm harmonica, the song was birthed at the 2017 Folk Alliance International Conference, whose theme this year was “Forbidden Folk.” Williams says, “One particular performance stuck with me, when I saw Joe Purdy perform. His entire new album is of the strongest mental caliber when talking about injustice, the environment, politics, humanity and all the things that I am striving to become more aware and a part of. While driving back, I wrote this song. It’s my way of saying that what I see with our Commander in Chief is not okay with me, and I won’t be silent.”

About Whetherman

Whetherman is the moniker of Nicholas Williams. A full time musician for ten years, Williams has opened for Taj Mahal and was the 2016 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase Finalist. Fascinated by a character named “Whether Man” in one of his childhood favorite books The Phantom Tollbooth, who speculated all things normal. The quote that stuck with Williams is when Whether Man told the young boy, “Whether or not you find your way, you’re bound to find some way.” Liking the idea of opening doors of perspective without expectations, Nicholas Williams chose the moniker Whetherman.
