The Vinyl District Gives Callow’s “Strange” an Early Spin
TVD Premiere: Callow, “Strange” and chats about vinyl —The Vinyl District
Life is strange. Relationships are strange. And Callow’s Red Moses and Sami Knowles are ready to take you along for that ride on the debut art rock single off their upcoming album, Blue Spells (due out Nov. 19). On “Strange”, the duo interweaves harmonies into equal parts of instrumental grit, seductive beauty, and guitar fuzz to jog naturally along as if in a seedy part of town where every twist and turn leads to another unexpected surprise.
Just as Callow’s sound has evolved overall since their 2012 release, Orb Weaver, so did “Strange”. After a conversation one late night about music, Knowles reflected on how big of an influence rhythm and blues was to her growing up and from there a bluesier rhythm section was rebirthed. The result adds depth and a soulful melancholy to the lyrics, “took a while, but I found my ground/I claim my way/ I stand my ground”.
