Sven-Erik Olsen Announces September 8 Album Release
The upcoming album release from Minneapolis musician Sven-Erik Olsen, Sketchbook Traces, captures the Twin/Tone sound of bands like The Replacements with cerebral songwriting and a tuneful harmonic adventure. The album is due out September 8. The first single, “Sketchbook Traces” is available as an approved downloadable mp3.
Olsen spent most of his childhood in a constant state between daydreaming and brainstorming. He explains, “Throughout my childhood, and even into college, I spent most of my time obsessively creating imaginary bands, drawing imaginary album covers, creating the song titles and bios of these fake artists, and even putting in the duration of each track. If I wasn’t doing that, I was in my room recording albums on cassette tapes, but rarely culled ideas from the imaginary artists. It was like they had a distinct world they existed in completely separate from my work.”
With the responsibilities of work and raising a family, he filed away those ideas. It wasn’t until recently that he started going back to them. Olsen began closing his eyes and imagining dropping the needles onto side A of one of these imaginary records, and out poured music that he could hear as clearly as a freshly opened vinyl. The eight songs of Sketchbook Traces can be traced back to those notebooks, and pieces of those books can be found in each and every song.
Heavy reverb filled guitars and infectious jangling choruses become the foundation to a larger body of work. The single, “Sketchbook Traces” is a sonic time capsule of 1965 - 1966, including records like Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds. Even the guitar solo section is a nod to the twelve-string solos on songs like “She Knows Me Too Well.” There’s a prominent element of ‘60s pop, with a clean psychedelic layer to tie it all together.
