The diversity of styles and moods on Silverhawk's The Forest For The Trees is impressive. The Densmores penned the protest song, "Class War," long before the Occupy movement; it's dreamy psychedelic guitar and Sam's lyrics teeter between disappointment and the need for change. The band shows off their playful side with "I Only Wanna Rock 'n' Roll," a cheery, mid-tempo groove, featuring ska-like rhythm guitar accents, rippling honky tonk piano and exuberant vocals. The noise heavy "Criminal" has a darker, denser vibe; layers of distorted guitars, screeching keys and hysterical laughter give the unnerving vocals a sinister aura.
With it's sonic landscapes and haunting vocals, The Valery Trails' debut album, Ghosts and Gravity, is aptly titled. Parasites and Sycophants agrees, calling the album, "an enticing work of mid-fi melodics done up in a grey backdrop of fuzz and jangle topped with skimming vocals." The Joy of Violent Movement has this to say about the album's first single, "Horizon" - "[it] reminds me ofUp-era R.E.M. I've been playing it a lot and have been obsessed with the track." Ghosts and Gravity will be released today, February 7.
