A huge fan of 826 Valencia who also teaches fine art and music to teenagers, the cause is close to Nadler’s heart. She says, “When I heard the song ‘Half as Much’ for the first time, the chorus really jumped out at me. I liked how simple it was, and how catchy it was. Deep down, I love music that is sincere and simple. This song is both of those things. I think a lot of people can relate to the sentiment expressed in the song.”
Marissa Nadler is an American dream-folk artist based in Boston. Her voice was described by Pitchfork Media as "a voice you would follow straight into Hades." In the Boston Globe, her voice and music is described: "She has a voice that, in mythological times, could have lured men to their deaths at sea, an intoxicating soprano drenched in gauzy reverb that hits bell-clear heights, lingers, and tapers off like rings of smoke." Music critics describe Nadler's songs as having American Gothic leanings; her stories often take place in an imagined, idealistic time with a cast of characters of her own creation.
The You Be My Heart compilation is an extended love affair with the nonprofit 826 National, which is dedicated to offering “a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills.” San Francisco songwriter Devon Reed, who volunteers with 826, wrote all the songs which were presented to the bands, who each selected one that called to them and in turn gave it their own unique twist. The result is a compilation featuring a who’s who in the indie rock scene with artists such as Bowerbirds, The Cloud Room, Maps & Atlases, Horse Feathers, and Mark Kozelek all participating to support the nonprofit's aim.
