GLG Fresh MP3 Friday: Marian Call & Jaggery
Be the first to post Marian Call's single, "Dear Mister Darcy"
off the album Something Fierce due out Nov. 13
As Marian Call explains, "Dear Mister Darcy" is an explosive rhyming extravaganza and slam poetry about Jane Austen set to an Ani DiFranco groove. I fictionalized the scenario using Jane Austen as a guide, imagining a modern Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett as two introverted, artistic people who are deeply in love with each other, but too inhibited to say anything about it. The typewriter in the song has to do with the female protagonist writing most of the song as a letter to this reserved, quiet boy -- a letter that she herself is too reserved and quiet to send. "All this anticipation without consummation, it's hard on a poor girl's pride -- and though I doubt I'll send this letter, if I did, you'd see how I've tried." There's a comic tragedy to the way our protagonist blames the boy in question for not making an advance, even while she admits she has not initiated anything with him. Be the first to post Jaggery's first single, "No Sympathy"
off their EP Private Violence due out Nov. 13
In the jazzy "No Sympathy", front woman Mali uses her seductive croon to engage in a "fascination with the dark side." In an upbeat and playful manner, Jaggery explores one of life's fixations. "Essentially, it's sung from the perspective of a woman who loves a bad boy," explains Mali. Inspired by Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, the bad boy of this story line is known murderer, Perry Smith. The song appropriately ends with Mali blaring the words "Bloody Murder!"Download "No Sympathy" now!
