Dusty Stray Announces Single, “Through The Atmosphere”
The first single of the fifth album Estranged by Netherlands-based American indie folk act Dusty Stray resembles a ghost. A friendly ghost. On first listen, the gentle, dreamy track sounds like a lullaby. But, “Through The Atmosphere” is actually a reflection on mortality, death and the afterlife. The hypnotic guitar picking and twinkling keys as well as the lack of a chorus lends to the ethereal feel of the song. Produced by Kramer, Estranged is out October 12 on Great Waters.
“Through The Atmosphere” is both haunting and picturesque all in the same gentle breeze. Like a music box slowly churning sonic melodies on a grey afternoon, the song echoes through a scattered foliage. Jonathan Brown explains his inspiration, saying, “This song came to me when I was walking through the forest alone thinking about a good friend of mine who had recently passed away. I was somehow trying to communicate with her beyond the grave. As I was walking in the forest, I came across a tree with a small red sign nailed to it with a first name followed by a date of birth and death. I thought it was strange to find this deep in the ‘bible belt’ of Holland.” The guitar slowly picks through measures of atmospheric sounds and wind-chime piano chords to create a conversation frozen in time.
Estranged contains the depth of a songwriter who has lived on different continents, traveled the world, and taken a piece of each place on to the next. Brown delves into universal themes of unrequited love, heartbreak, loneliness, and death, but (almost) always with a small dose of hope and redemption. The melodic, lightly psychedelic acoustic-based songs are often accompanied by a number of unusual instruments and toys. There are softer melodies like that of “Down” which features a baritone ukulele, and others like “Old and Gray” which talks about the half-centennial of life. Each lyric, note, and melody is like the contents of an old, worn journal with the page just waiting to be read.
