Daniel Steinbock Announces Single, "Out of Blue"

The new indie folk single from Daniel Steinbock moves like a sunbeam after a light drizzle of rain, leaving the earth with a glistening varnish of dew. “Out of Blue” is a soft-hearted, introspective look at enveloping love that is uncontrollably honest and surreal. Combining a lush pallet of vocals dancing with a honeyed melody, the single dances through an open field toward the open, glowing sky. The song shines, despite having been recorded under some very dire circumstances. Featuring backing vocals from fellow Sonoma County residents, Rainbow Girls, the single is the title track off the upcoming album, out February 15.

“Out of Blue” was recorded in the midst of nature’s chaotic might. One night last October, the most destructive wildfire in California history hit Sonoma County in Northern CA, burning down whole neighborhoods in Santa Rosa, Steinbock’s hometown. He explains, “I’d just left town the night before and headed to a studio in the mountains a few hours east. I was planning to spend the week recording, and the Rainbow Girls were coming to add backing vocals on the title track, ‘Out of Blue’. When they showed up that morning, we’d all just gotten the news that our homeland was on fire. We were totally spooked, and had to make a decision weighing the importance of recording versus our fears that our homes were under threat.” In the end, they decided to quickly record “Out of Blue” and the girls rushed back home. “You’d never know any of this listening to the song. You just hear the Rainbow Girls singing their beautiful hearts out — as artists do in the very best and very worst of times.”

As a whole, Out of Blue rattles in a cage like a bird craving to be set free. Ultimately, it’s a break-up album, but one that tells the whole story. It doesn’t dwell in pain and sorrow, but embraces the whole journey, because to fall out of love means to have experienced the bliss of falling in love, and everything in between. According to Steinbock, the term “out of blue” holds three essential meanings that are explored throughout the album’s love story. One is that of the Big Bang, and the great mystery of primordial creativity appearing out of the void. As an artist, Steinbock also nods at the personal creative process as a whole, and how songs come out of the blue like gifts from the Muse. Lastly, the process of healing which pulls one out of the blue, out of sadness and depression, reborn into the light. These meanings are different ways of connecting with the album. They are stories within the story, much like the human experiences woven throughout the individual years that make up a lifetime. Whether happily in love or coming out of the blue, this record holds every emotion up to the light, revealing its beauty and worth.
