Allen Clapp Releases New Experimental Synth Pop Single "Friend Collector"

Originally meant as a commentary on modern society and social media culture, Allen Clapp incidentally wrote a pop-driven analog ode to Stranger Things. Told from Nancy Wheeler’s perspective as she explores the arrows of love and the collection of her friends collected by a monstrous force, “Friend Collector” is a science-fiction journey that delves into the depths of the Upside Down and the many terrifying, slimey, and dangerous secrets, including the faceless Demogorgon. It is the first single off his experimental synthpop EP, Six Seasons, due out on November 11 on Minty Fresh (The Cardigans).

Clapp explains: "When I started writing the song, the villain was an Internet Troll -- somebody messing with your online life. But whenever I think of someone trolling, I always picture a Lord of the Rings or Dungeons & Dragons creature. It's like what the person is doing is so gross, that I just imagine a fantastical troll sitting on the other side of the screen, doing their dark bidding. So when I was finishing up work on Six Seasons earlier this summer, we had just spent a weekend binge-watching Stranger Things, and the idea of this troll collecting your online friends was literally being played out by the Demogorgon. It was like sci-fi synchronicity. I didn't even have to change the words. Suddenly, you could see this being sung from Nancy's perspective -- being collected by Steve and his popular friends; having Barb collected by the Demogorgon for real; having an inner dialogue about the compromises she's made. If nothing else, it justified what I was already doing -- an accidental homage; a predestined coincidence -- and made me feel like I was a part of something bigger.”

“Friend Collector” Lyrics

TO STEVE:

I don’t know if it’s wrong
To be hung up on a feeling
I don’t know if it’s wrong
If I fall under your spell

TO BARB:

But I would do anything
To go back to the way it was
I would do anything to get you back
To get you back
Before I sold you,
Before they stole you

TO THE DEMOGORGON:

You are the Friend Collector
You collected my friends
Prime time, you did it online
You did it for real
Now I’m just watching you
Just watching you, just watching you
Living my life (living my life)
Living my life instead

TO HERSELF:

Halcyon days
The filter-swept shades of who you are
Careful who you know
Be careful who you show
You’ve come so far

TO STEVE THE NIGHT BARB WAS STOLEN:

When you collected me
It felt so right, It felt so free
All of the Q&As
The heart-to-hearts
It seemed so smart
Until it tore us both apart

TO THE DEMOGORGON:

You are the Friend Collector
You collected my friends
Crime time, you did it online
You did it for real
Now I’m just watching you
Just watching you, just watching you
Living my life (living my life)
Living my life instead
