High Five! from Loves It!
Loves It! members Vaughn Walters and Jenny Parrott met in their adopted hometown of Austin, Texas merely five years ago. “We were best friends who fell into the big hole of love,” Parrott explains. “Vaughn’s a great singer/songwriter and he's easy to work with, so I thought our own band would be the ticket to fun and musical fulfillment." Walters sings, plays banjo, and guitar, while Parrott sings, plays guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. As talented multi-instrumentalists, they were in-demand players in Austin’s wide-open music scene, but their personal and musical bond slowly drew them closer. About a year ago, Walters and Parrott started writing songs together, which eventually formed the foundation of their self-produced album YAY!.
When asked about their choice of band name, Parrott notes, “‘Loves it,’ is what Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie used to say to each other on their reality show The Simple Life. When [Vaughn and I] started becoming friends we would pretend that I was Paris, because I had bleached blonde hair at the time and I was wild. We’d say ‘Loves It’ to each other all the time. [The phrase] seemed like a bright, funny name for a band.”
Loves It! bandmates Vaughn Walters and Jenny Parrott share a few of the things they Love with a capital L in this week's High Five!:
1. Caprese Salad
I ate a caprese sandwich once with my Italian-American mom on the Amalfi Coast of Italy when I was 15. It's one of my most vivid memories, so I like to indulge and have this dish on special occasions (or any other occasion I can make up). This is what I think about when I dream about becoming rich – I could have all the caprese I want, anytime!
2. Cat Armpits
My cat’s armpits are so soft! Frank ii is so affectionate, she’ll sleep on me, purr in anticipation of being petted, and for some reason she likes to smell my eyes. Frank ii likes to attack things, but never people, even when she's riled up. As soon as I find her I'll give her a high five.
3. Eating Snacks in Bed with a Good Book
I love snacks, naps, and books, so this is a triple whammy! I really like Victorian literature, as well as cheese and tomato sandwiches. Sometimes this pastime is so much fun (for me) that it will make my roommates laugh out loud.
4. Making Art with Friends
I like to sit around with my buddies, eat snacks, drink, smoke, and host art nights. I have a crummy art set that Vaughn gave me when I had surgery once, so I’ll bust it out, invite friends over, sit on the floor, listen to Michael Jackson records, and make art.
In Austin, we are always two-steppin’ to country music. A few weeks ago while we were in Lafayette, LA with the Red Stick Ramblers for the Black Pot Festival, we started to Cajun two-step, which is slightly different than the Texas two-step. I kept teasing Vaughn, because he would switch back and forth between the steps. We coined Vaughn’s dance “The Beaumont" two-step, because Beaumont, TX is between Austin and Lafayette.
