Currently on tour, Harris Shper (H) and Christine Hale (C), the dynamic duo that makes up The Hoof & The Heel, took some time to answer some random questions and give insight to their debut LP set to release in 2012.
If you're in the Brooklyn area, be sure to check them out on Dec. 2 at The Rock Shop, along with Little Scream and Doug Keith.
What have you been up to in the last six months? What are your plans for the next year?
H & C: During the summer, we mostly worked on our debut LP. It was a long process and we really took the time to be in-depth with the tunes and arrangements. It was a lot of fun and frustrating at times, but we're very happy with the results and are looking to release it in the first half of 2012. Now we're just concentrating on our live show and touring a bit. We played Pop Montreal recently and are working towards more festivals.
What will people get out of listening to your music?
H: I think music can be a very personal thing, so as long as they get something out of it, it's worth it. I don't expect people to share the same emotions or feelings as I do about the songs and I like the idea that people can interpret their own meanings if they choose to. When I listen to music, I'll often make up stories or be reminded of feelings, and it probably has little to do with the music that's playing, but it works for me!
Give me one sentence that describes your band.
H & C: Look over there!
Who, or what, inspires you? Why?
H: Lots and lots of music. Seeing new music and listening to old music. I love Montreal and all of the musicians/artists around. Not only is there a lot of inspiring work, but also a friendly sense of community. The seasons are definitely a big inspiration as well as the contrast between the country and the city.
C: Dr. Seuss, Miyazaki, Annie Dillard and my friends.
What is the best piece of advice you actually followed?
H & C: Don't stop believing (hold on to that feeling).
Because we're all about giving back, Green Light Go will feature one band or artist per month that's not on our roster and give them the break that they deserve. If you are a band interested in being considered for Gimme a Break, please contact Janelle Rogers at Janelle @glgpub.com.
